ASCA 2015 – a missed Opportunity to hear Coaching Legends Banks, Gemmell, Sweetenham on Women’s Distance Freestyle

I wasn’t in Cleveland at ASCA 2015, which was disappointing on a number of levels.  Our present Performance Director in Swim Ireland, Peter Banks’ was inducted to the Hall of Fame, a well deserved recognition for his work with Brooke Bennett’s multiple Olympic performances in distance freestyle events.

It must have been an interesting after dinner discussion, given Bill Sweetenham’s reported comments following Bruce Gemmell’s delivery of his work with Katie Ledecky with all of that knowledge in the same room.

Pity I missed the conference but thanks to Craig Lord and the quality of reporting on Swim Vortex, I’ve synopsised some of Bruce’s insights into Katie’s training and his work with her over the last few years.  I was fortunate to hear Yuri Sugiyama present in 2013 post the success in London, but the combined observations in to this wonderful athlete gives us all as coaches some food for thought as we head in to another Olympic year.
